seethepotential,plusit’sina greatlocation,”Emmasays.
Atthetime,thecottagehada limegreeninterior,which
waslaterrepaintedwhite.Manyfamilyworkingbees
laterandthenearbyshedwasconvertedintoadditional
bedroomsanda livingareabyliningitwithplywood,
installingslidingbarn-styledoors,andpaintingthe
concretef loor.Theshedwaslinkedtothehousewitha large
deck,whichcreatedanadditionalentertainmentarea.
“Ithadtostayhumbleandnottooprecious—thatwas
reallyimportanttous,”saysEmma.“Wewerecarefulnotto
overdoit.Thebathroomhadyellowtilesanda mosaicaround
thebathandwewonderedhowfardowegoregardingour
beliefsaboutrecyclingandreusingmaterial.Intheendwe
keptthetilesandputweatherboardoverthemosaic.Now
it’soneofourfavouriterooms.Theyellowtilesmakeit!”
Thesistershavethrivedontheircombinedcreative
project, which they say has brought them even closer.They’vecreateda beautifulandrestfulspacewithdaybeds
—perfectforafternoonnaps—anda collectionofvintage
waressourcedfromtheirfavouritestoresinAdelaide
andbeyond.Everyiteminthehousehasbeencarefully
consideredforpurpose,comfortandbeauty.“Wewanted
ittobewhimsical,romanticandmagical—a placetogo
anddreamonholidays,”Sarahsays.“It’sa goodinterior
wheneverylittleareatellsa story.”
Earlierthisyear,theydecidedtoopenthecottageasa
holidayrentalsootherscanenjoyit.“It’sa greatfeeling
sharingwhatyoulovewithothers,”Emmasays.
Thepartnershipbetweenthetwocoupleshasbeenso
successfulthattheyrecentlypurchaseda tinshedonthe
YorkePeninsulawithplanstocreateanotherholidayhouse.
EmmaandSarahlovenothingmorethanwalkingalong
thebeachtogether,collectingfoliageandpebblesasthey
go.“Thishaschangedourlives.Havinga housewithmy
sistermeanswegettogrowupalloveragain,”Sarahsays.
