“air-dried real food” with very little
flavor; the collagen powder is offered
in an unflavored version as well as
in Aztec Vanilla and Dutch Cocoa,
the latter of which uses real cocoa
powder and monk-fruit extract for a
light sweetness. The regular protein
powder, which also includes egg
protein, is available in more flavors,
like Maple Pecan and Banana Berry,
for variety-seekers.
Smith says he offers regular
beef- and egg-based protein as
well as collagen powder options in
order to cater to different needs,
and he’s open about the limitations
of collagen as an overall protein
supplement (while still touting its
wide range of benefits). “Collagen
is rich in three or four amino acids
which are important for gut health
and your skin, hair, and nails,
but you want a more complete
protein source for general protein
requirements or as a post-workout
supplement,” he says.
As of this writing, Paleo Pro is
getting ready to launch a collagen-
protein bar that Smith says is the
result of two years of research and
development, in Coconut Cacao
and Cherry Cashew flavors. They
wanted to ensure a combination of
healthy ingredients that taste good
and are also shelf-stable, not just

put something on the market “because
everyone else was doing it,” Smith
says. They also recently launched their
Power Coffee powder, which combines
Arabica coffee, beetroot, MCTs, and
collagen for a tasty and nutritious
coffee or pre-workout alternative.
While protein powder and fish oil
supplements may not be the most
“natural” lifestyle inputs from an
ancestral perspective, Smith understands
that human beings have the free will
and desire to do unnatural things all
the time. If you decide to undertake a
challenge, from a 60-hour work week to
a 100-mile ultra-race through the desert,
and need some extra support, there
should be high-quality, clean products to
help, he asserts. “If you can eat and get
all your nutrients
through food,
do it,” he says.
“Supplements
are just that:
they’re meant
to supplement a
good diet.”
