PREGNANT
APPLAUSE

  • Knocked up and
    knackered? Hear this:
    scientists have proven the
    metabolic rate of pregnant
women to be the same as
    that of elite athletes doing
    endurance events like the
    Tour de France*. They found
    that humans’ maximum
    energy expenditure is 2.
times its resting rate – and
    that pregnant women run
    at 2.2 times theirs. Someone
    give that woman a seat.

HOT NEWS
FLASH

  • Is there anything CBT can’t
    do? While you’ll no doubt
be familiar with its work in
    easing anxiety, scientists
    from the North American
    Menopause Society have
    found it to be useful
    in treating a range of
    menopausal symptoms,
    including depression, hot
    flushes, sleep disturbances
    and sexual issues, with
    the improvements in
    symptoms observed for
    three months following
    the treatment. Worth
    raising with your GP.

ROOKIE
REWARDS

  • Need something to get you
    over the line from talking
    about running a marathon
    to actually signing up? This
should do it: a recent study*
    has found that new runners
    reap the greatest heart gains
    from running a marathon.
    Just six months of training
    saw novice runners’ aortas
    travel four years back in
    time, with the best results
    for those with the slowest
    finish times. It’s not always
    about the winning...

THE

TO-DO
LIST

SOME LIKE
IT HOT

  • Stuck in a stuffy office while
    your colleagues are OOO?
    Take comfort in the fact
    that you’re probably doing
    your best work. Female
    cognitive function improves
    as temperatures rise, a
    new study* shows. As the
    thermostat was cranked up
    to 32°C, female participants
    did better in maths and
    verbal tests, while men
    performed worse. Steamy.

Workin’

9 to 5

Sorry, Dolly, but it’s not the best way to make a
living if your creative juices flow best after dinner.
Luckily for night owls, new research, published
in the journal Sleep Medicine, suggests that you
can shift your body clock forwards by two whole
hours – cracking news if your natural wake-up
time coincides with the day’s second meeting.
Participants with an average bedtime of 2.30am
woke themselves up two or three hours earlier
than their usual 10am for three weeks. Other hacks
included breakfasting ASAP, exercising in the
morning and avoiding caffeine after 3pm.

STAND AND
DELIVEROO

  • Reading this over a two-
    day-old salad? Stand up.
    New research* shows that
    standing – which induces
    physical stress – mutes
    your taste buds, making
    you less sensitive to flavour.
    While we’re not advocating
    you lowering your lunching
    standards indefinitely, it
    might make things more
    palatable on the days
    when you’re using up
    whatever’s left in the fridge.
