he sun – and the UK’s fittest men and
women – came out to play for two
days of deadlifting, tyre-turning,
burpeeing magic at June’s Under
Armour Turf Games Summer Festival
in London. The sunshine might not
have had staying power, but the athletes definitely did.
The second annual fitness competition – the first
with Under Armour as title sponsor – saw London’s
Rosslyn Park Rugby Club transformed into a massive
outdoor arena that featured everything from assault
bikes to functional training rigs.
Teams could compete in three categories – Corporate,
Everyday or Elite Athletes – and this year, 430 of 950
athletes were women. Within each division, mixed and
same-sex teams faced butt-kicking circuits created by
some of the UK’s best gyms, including Third Space, Core
Collective, Gymbox and WIT Fitness. Turf Games media
partners Women’s Health and Men’s Health even threw
down the gauntlet, with Amy Lane, Francesca Menato,
Alice Liveing, Ted Lane and Robert Laidlaw pushing
themselves to the limit in the Everyday Athletes division.
‘What was amazing was that there was a place for every
individual and ability,’ says Under Armour trainer Nik
Naidoo. ‘It showed you don’t need to be an elite performer
to be an “athlete” – everyone has it inside of them.’
Cheered on by crowds thronging the sidelines, the
athletes barely noticed when the heavens opened in
the final hours. DJs and Beats by Dre kept the blood
pumping, while food vendors offered up piping hot vegan
burgers and saucy tacos to keep the athletes fuelled for
the gruelling competition – and the party afterwards.
‘This year’s event was the biggest and best yet, from the
calibre of the athletes to the atmosphere in the finals,’
says Turf Games founder and director Andrew Manteit,
who promises exciting things in store for 2020. ‘Next
year will see new cities, new workouts, new experiences
and a whole lot more fun for all those involved.’
