Expect the Unexpected

The week we went to press with this issue, a snowstorm hit Colorado (where
Timber Home Living is headquartered), causing the National Weather
Service to issue a winter-weather advisory for towns like Walden and Steam-
boat Springs. It was June 21 — the fi rst day of “summer.” Less than seven
days later, the state experienced a heat wave, with temperatures nearing 100
degrees Fahrenheit in some areas. Global warming? Maybe. Totally strange?
Maybe not...
For my colleagues living in the Rocky Mountain region, this kind of wild
weather swing is nothing new. In fact, our creative director Edie Mann is
famous for saying, “If you don’t like the weather in Colorado, just wait fi ve
minutes.” But as a resident of the sweltering-but-consistent southeastern
quadrant of the United States, I was aghast. A blizzard in summer? No thank
you. I’m heading to the beach.
This little summer-school lesson from Mother Nature is a good example
of how designing and building a custom home, like a timber home, mirrors
life, itself. You have to be prepared for the unexpected and
learn how to roll with the punches, because even the most
well-planned construction project will have a few glitches
along the way. You simply have to face the mountain and start
to climb so that you can reach the summit and be rewarded
with a breathtaking view. And in this case, that view is the home
you’ve been seeing in your mind’s eye. So as you start on your
timber home trek, expect the unexpected — and prepare for
a blizzard — but rest assured that clear skies lie ahead.
