By using dark stains and

paints in your home, you

can actually make both

your interior and the out-

side world seem brighter

and cheerier. It’s all about

perception. Architects and

interior designers know

this, and in areas with

heavy cloud cover — like

the Pacific Northwest

— they often design a

relatively dark-toned room

with exceptionally large

windows. This way, the

outdoors won’t appear as
