on the end of the crank,andvarious spacers
hadbeen used tolocatethe generator
flywheelandits taper lock bush laterally on
the crank.Putting all of this backtogether,
IfoundIcould not get anyweightontothe
engine sprocket,toforceit home andhold it
on its taper and key.Hmmm.
Checking the manypicturesItook during
the strip downrevealedIhad missed nothing,
but whatheld the engine sprocket in place?
Well,nothing,asitturned out!Theowner
revealed the alternatorrotor and statorhad
beenremovedand theElectrexunitfitted
instead of it,but the engine sprocket hadn’t
been disturbed or evenconsidered.Luckily
afterthe swap,the engine sprocket had
just...well...stayedput,heldonbygood old
fresh air! Ifigured outameans of putting a
solid spacer between theflywheelgenerator
and the engine sprocket,locking the whole

Removing mainbearings always
sounds simple,too.Observethe
tyre levers,weightsandtorch...

The Norton’scrankshaftis in
threeparts,twoaxlesanda
centralflywheeltowhich they
bolt.Here disassembledtoc

lean
out the sludge trap(a go
odidea)

lot ontothe crankshaft, giving much peace
oofmind.Theoil tankwasremovedand
wwashed outforevenmorepeaceofmind.
Niggles aside,with the engine back
ttogether and bolted in placeinthe frame,
itwas soon timetoseeifthebeastwould
sstart.AsingleMikuni carburettorresides
wherealargeAmalwould
haveoriginally lived,sono
ticklingwasrequired,but
therewasachoke in the
fformofalever operatedenrichener.Iwasn’t
expectingfirst-kick starting–andIcertainly
didn’t get it,butIgot lots ofkickbacks and
thecompressionwasalso much stronger
than before.Even thoughIhad set the
ignition timing‘asbefore’,something
wasn’t right.
