The selector forks havetomatch with their
relativegears

Thetwocamshaftsrun on six needle bearings!

Ignition timingSandD(leftand right inItalian)
marks on theflywheel.Thebottom end showsthe
correct position of the balanceshaft relativeto
thecylinder axis.LeftpistonatTDC

tighteningallthe fasteners in the proper
sequence. With thatdone,itiseasiertohump
the engine back intothe frame beforeadding
all the side frippery.
Atrickforrouting the generatorcable –
back up the hole in frontofthefinaldrive
sprocket and under the startermotor–isto
simplyremovethe startermotor.Notethat
the crinkle-fini shcoveroverthe startermotor
will notcomeawaywithoutfirst taking out
the camchain adjuster bolt.MrBodger had
already gouged thefinish as heforced it out.
Toassemble the balanceshaft,heatthe
coveruntil the shaftand itsbearing drop out.
Nowplacethe leftpistonatTDC.Thebalancer
must nowbeslotted intothe drivegear so
thattheears of the thing arehorizontaltothe
centreline of thecylinder axis.Notethatthis
is NOTpositioned along the9to3plane.The
rest is straightforward.
Finally, theAlpino motorwasrebuilt as
Laverdaintended withMrBodger’s mishaps
corrected.Justatouch on the starterresulted
in the lovely jewel of Breganzerunningvery
nicely.Itneededalittlebit of carburettor
fiddlingandwasthenreadyforMarytoride it
the 375 miles back home...
