“It’s never in the last place you look. It was in the first
place, but you missed it.” — graffiti
Players often tell me their record at guessing missing
queens is perfect: They always misguess. An expert declarer
will usually guess right. Clues will point the way.
Against today’s 1NT, East takes the ace of spades and
returns the three: jack, queen. Declarer expects a third
spade, but West shifts to the jack of hearts. South takes
the ace.
Who has the queen of diamonds?
SouthknowsthatEasthasthequeenofhearts,and
he had the ace of spades. If West had the ace of clubs he
would have continued spades to set up his suit. So East has
the ace of clubs.
Most Easts would have opened in third seat with 12
points, so South should play West for the queen of dia-
monds. After South takes four diamonds, he can cash the
king of spades and king of hearts and exit with a heart.

4 3. Your partner opens one diamond, the next player over-
calls one spade and you double (negative). Partner bids two
hearts. What do you say?

ANSWER:Your double promised a heart suit and enough
strength to respond, plus diamond support or clubs.
Partner’s two hearts is not a strength-showing “reverse”;
he has “raised” the suit your double promised. Still, your
chances for game merit a raise to three hearts.

HAPPY BIRTHDAYfor Monday,
Aug. 19, 2019:
This year, you will be full of get-
up-and-go. You will need to have a
physical outlet to clear away some
of your high energy. If single, you
will meet someone toward the end
of this birthday year. This person
will encourage you to stop and get
to know him or her better. If at-
tached, this coming year will re-
volve around new perspectives,
traveling and in-laws. You will be-
come far less judgmental as well.
ARIES can match your energy any
day!
ARIES (March 21-April 19)
You will hear a lot of news, with
perhaps some gossip sprinkled
in. An authority figure seems cool
and austere. This person's expec-
tations might not be the same as
yours. Tonight: You call the shots.
Others go along with your choic-
es.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20)
Pull back and listen. You could
feel unusually pressured and
might not want to participate in a
discussion. You might be unusual-
ly serious. Your perspective could
be enhanced by staying mum. To-
night: Head home, screen your
calls and take the dog for a long
walk.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20)
You could find an argument pow-
erful, but it is not one you can
support. In fact, rather than dis-
cuss the issue, the other party
closes down. You could feel frus-
trated. Still, information comes
up. Tonight: A partner seems
ready to spill the beans.
CANCER (June 21-July 22)
You decide you will call the shots
today. Do not be surprised if a
close associate develops an atti-
tude. Let it happen, but make sure
you really want the lead. Make an
important call. Tonight: Say yes to
an offer.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)
You cannot seem to go along with
the status quo. You know a lot, but
decide to question a decision or
an important change of direction.
You will seek out expert advice.
You will also try to place yourself
in another's shoes. Tonight: Be
imaginative.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)
You might want to draw a partner
or associate into what you deem a
major conversation. You can see
all sorts of positive outcomes. The
other party might not agree and
might want to postpone this chat.
Give this person space. Tonight:
Relaxing with a loved one.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
Your inclination to let others han-
dle problems might be convenient
for you and flattering for others.
You could want to respond to a
friend's or loved one's overtures.
This person is frequently lucky for
you. Tonight: Return calls, then
decide.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)
You could feel a bit out of sorts,
possibly because of a financial
gamble. You also might sense an
undercurrent around you. A lot
might be going on that others are
choosing not to discuss with you.
Do not push, just listen. Tonight:
Get some extra R and R.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)
You have more than your share of
energy, which is visible to anyone
looking at you. What could be a
problem is that you are far more
prone to taking risks when you
feel like this. Choose your risks
with care. Tonight: Keep it light.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
You find that others could be un-
usually playful and fun-loving.
Loosen up if you can, but do not
act negatively toward those who
are not as reactive and work-ori-
ented as you. Good news heads
your way after a discussion. To-
night: Talking with a loved one or
friend.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)
Return calls quickly. You might
need to revamp your schedule be-
cause of what you hear. An oppor-
tunity that heads your way needs
to be explored, especially if a
friend is invited. Tonight: Telling
it like it is.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)
Deal with financial matters early,
before too much happens and you
do not have time. People seek you
out left and right. Remain as re-
sponsive as possible. You take
charge of a project. Tonight: A
must appearance.
