MLB: Braves beat Dodgers despite Acuna benching

With All-Star outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. benched for not hus-
tling, Rafael Ortega stepped up with a sixth-inning grand slam to lift
the Braves over the Dodgers, 5-3, on Sunday in Atlanta.
Acuna was pulled before the fifth after failing to run out a drive off
the right-field wall in the third. The ball bounced off the wall for a
long single, but likely would have been a double had he hustled.
The Nationals matched a team record with eight home runs —
including two by Juan Soto — in a 16-8 rout of the visiting Brewers as
Washington took two of three from a fellow NL wild-card contender.
In Williamsport, Pa., Jose Quintana pitched seven crisp innings,
Anthony Rizzo hit a two-run homer and the Cubs beat the Pirates 7-1
in the MLB Little League Classic. The Cubs are in a virtual tie with the
Cardinals atop the NL Central, who beat the Reds 5-4 in Cincinnati.
In Boston, Rafael Devers went 4-for-5 with a homer, two doubles
and four RBIs, and the Red Sox rallied from an early six-run deficit for
a 13-7 victory that completed a three-game sweep of the Orioles.
In Oakland, Calif., Zack Greinke threw seven smooth innings for
his 200th win, pitching the first-place Astros past the Athletics 4-1.
Austin Hedges had four hits, including a tiebreaking homer in
the seventh to lead the visiting Padres to a 3-2 win over the Phillies.

ETC.: Broadcasting legend Whitaker dead at 95

Jack Whitaker, whose Hall of Fame broadcasting career ranged
from the first Super Bowl to Secretariat’s Triple Crown to short essays
from major sporting events, died of natural causes in his sleep at the
age of 95 on Sunday morning, CBS reported.
Whitaker, who was wounded on Omaha Beach three days after the
D-Day Invasion, began his broadcast career at WCAU-TV in Philadel-
phia and spent 22 years with CBS Sports. Whitaker had been the only
living play-by-play announcer from the first 21 Super Bowls.
DeWanna Bonner scored 17 of her 30 points in the fourth quarter
and had 10 rebounds to help the Phoenix Mercury beat the visiting Lib-
erty, 78-72, extending their losing streak to eight games. Tina Charles had
23 points — 15 in the first quarter — and 13 rebounds for the Liberty (8-18).
Madison Keys rallied late in both sets and beat Svetlana Kuz-
netsova 7-5, 7-6 (5) for her first Cincinnati championship, sending her
into the U.S. Open on a one-week upswing.
In Endicott, N.Y., Doug Barron became the 13th Monday quali-
fier to win a PGA Tour Champions event, holing two 15-foot birdie
putts after a rain delay to beat Fred Couples by two strokes in the
Dick’s Sporting Goods Open.
In Long Pond, Pa., Will Power won a shortened IndyCar race at
Pocono Raceway. The race was called with 72 laps left because of
lightning and severe weather in the area.

AUSTIN, Texas — Former
NFL running back Cedric Ben-
son, one of the most prolific
rushers in NCAA and University
of Texas history, has died in a
motorcycle accident in
Texas. He was 36.
Benson’s attorney,
Sam Bassett, said Aus-
tin law enforcement
told him that Benson
was killed in the wreck
Saturday night. He had
no details about the ac-
cident.
Benson was a key
player in the Longhorns’ resur-
gence under coach Mack Brown,
who said Sunday that Benson’s
death has left him grief-stricken.
“He was as good as you’ll ever
see as a football player and as
tough as they come,” said Brown,
who recently returned to coach

North Carolina following a long
run at Texas. “But what I’ll re-
member most is what a special,
special person he was. ... It’s just
heartbreaking, but we feel very
fortunate to have had him in our
lives.”
Benson played at
Texas from 2001-2004
and his 5,540 yards
ranks second at the uni-
versity and ninth in
NCAA history. He
scored 64 career touch-
downs with the Long-
horns and won the
Doak Walker award,
given to the nation’s top
running back, in 2004.
Benson was drafted No. 4 over-
all by the Bears in 2005 and
helped Chicago reach the play-
offs the following season. He had
his finest years with Cincinnati
from 2008-11 and finished his ca-
reer with the Packers in 2012.
