Trump confirms interest in buying Greenland

Donald Trump has confirmed he wants the US to buy Greenland from Denmark, despite Copenhagen
rejecting the idea as “absurd”. The US president told journalists he was “looking at [buying Greenland]” but
admitted the deal was not a top priority for his administration.

“The concept came up and ... strategically it’s interesting,” he said. “It is not number one on the burner; I
can tell you that.” The president, speaking on board Air Force One, said the idea originated in
conversations between members of his administration and was essentially a large real estate deal.

Yesterday, the Danish prime minister said he hoped Mr Trump was not being serious. “Greenland is not for
sale. Greenland is not Danish. Greenland belongs to Greenland. I strongly hope that this is not meant
seriously,” Mette Frederiksen told the newspaper Sermitsiaq.

TV presenter punched live on air during protest

A journalist was knocked unconscious live on air after being punched in the face while covering an anti-rape
protest. Video footage published by TV network ADM 40 shows reporter Juan Manuel Jimenez speaking to
the camera as women yell at him during a march in Mexico City.

As the reporter continues speaking to the camera, a man dressed in a white T-shirt and blue baseball cap
walks up to him and punches him in the face before calmly walking away. Mr Jimenez can be seen lying on
the ground seemingly unconscious as protesters chase after his attacker.

The demonstrations, triggered by allegations that two teenage girls were raped by a group of policemen,
have become known as the “glitter protests” after marchers doused the city’s police chief in pink glitter.

Thousands flee Gran Canaria wildfires

Wildfires in Gran Canaria have forced around 4,000 people to flee their homes. Authorities said the flames
ravaged more than 1,235 acres on the Canary Island in less than a day. At least 600 emergency staff,
including 250 firefighters, worked to tackle the blaze on Sunday near the town of Valleseco. Army
personnel were also fighting the blaze. Local government officials said nine helicopters and two planes were
being used in the operation.

Gran Canaria is experiencing temperatures close to 40C, humidity levels below 30 per cent and strong
winds, which usually provide what experts call the “perfect storm” for strong wildfires. “The environmental
damage has already been done,” said Angel Victor Torres, the region’s president, in comments carried by
the private Europa Press news agency. “We are facing a complicated situation in which the security of
people is the priority now.”

Tourist destination the Cross of Tejeda, which sits on a high mountain pass with sweeping views of the
island, was evacuated on Saturday evening, as was a nearby luxury hotel. The village of Tejeda, which has a
population of just under 2,000 people, and other nearby areas were also cleared. Tejeda was also evacuated
last week as another wildfire spread through the area.
