Ava DuVernay (1), Ryan
Murphy (5), Sterling K.
Brown (4) and Angela
Bassett (1) were among
the honorees at the African
American Film Critics
Association TV Honors
at the California Yacht
Club. “TV is generating
so much relevant work,”
AAFCA president Gil
Robertson IV (5) told THR,
noting that it’s an ideal
moment for the organiza-
tion to launch its first TV
awards. “There certainly
seems to be an openness
by the industry to tell
diverse stories.” Murphy,
honored with the Icon
Award, told the audience
that 87 out of 134 TV
episodes he’s produced
since making The People
v. O.J. Simpson have
been directed by people
from underrepresented
communities. DuVernay
received the best limited
series prize for When They
See Us and thanked the
late Roger Ebert, whose
widow, Chaz Ebert, was in
attendance, for the vital
role he played in launching
her career. — ALEX CRAMERKershaw’s Big Win
“The biggest prerequisite is
just kids in need,” pitcher
Clayton Kershaw (9) told
THR about the goal of the
seventh annual ping-pong
tournament at Dodger
Stadium. Bryan
Cranston (10) served as
this year’s emcee and
explained why this is an
important effort for him to
support. “What they’re
doing is literally saving
lives,” he said. “Each time
there’s $6,300 donated to
the Kershaw Challenge,
that saves one child’s life
from the sex slave
business.” Brad Paisley
and Kimberly Williams-
Paisley (9) were honored
with the Impact Award as
guests enjoyed HiHo
Cheeseburgers, ice cream
and Dodger Dogs. This
year’s tournament raised
$800,000 for nonprofits
that help disadvantaged
kids in L.A. and abroad,
including the Dream
Center, the Just Keep Livin
Foundation and the L.A.
Dodgers Foundation. — A.C.Ping Pong 4 Purpose
