Serviceability was the name of the game
when it came to the engine-bay layout.
Everything is terminated at a bulkhead
on the firewall, and the bay can be
stripped bare in under an hour. The wire
loom is also run through a firewall plug
and features Motorsport connectors
throughout
However, any dreams of keeping the 323 leaf sprung
and simple went out the window the moment that the
15x11-inch steelies were sat under the rear.
“It looked stupid; it just sat too high,” he recalls.
Perhaps that was simply the excuse that Tim needed
to go HAM on it, as no time was wasted, and, in short order,
the rear sheet metal was binned. In its place sits an equal-
length four-link, custom chassis rails, and a shortened
Hilux diff. A set of large tubs that sit just shy of the window
line were fabricated to accommodate up to a 26x8.5-inch
drag slick and survive shredding tyres on the pad. The rear
is dominated by custom sheet metal, housing the complete
fuel system and avoiding the need for a rear firewall. A
custom tunnel and MotorSport New Zealand –spec cage
complete the interior-fabrication list — the cage being the
only thing on the entire project that Tim didn’t weld himself.
When it came to the power plant, a 13B turbo
was always on the cards, and, with a second-hand
bridgeported and dowelled block turning up at the right
time, it was the perfect choice to keep things moving along.
The stainless turbo manifold, exhaust, intercooler, radiator,
catch-can, and breather — the list goes on and on — have
