VW’s electric SUV hits the road

VOLKSWAGEN’S UPCOMING

ID electric SUV has finally been

seen on the roads, two years

after it was first revealed in

concept form.

The Kia e-Niro rival, based

on the ID Crozz concept, is set

to enter production after the

ID 3 hatchback in 2020 and will

be available in two bodystyles:

a coupé-SUV inspired by the
original concept and the more

practical SUV pictured here.

Despite the typical test mule

camouflage, it’s clear the new

ID model retains much of the

concept’s exterior themes

although it has conventional

rear doors instead of the

concept’s sliding ones. The

model has yet to receive an

official production name,

b u t i t ’s l i ke l y to fo l l ow th e

numerical approach adopted

by its hatchback sibling.

Expected to be just over

4.6m long, the ID SUV will sit

between the Tiguan and seven-

seat Tiguan Allspace in terms

of size. VW claims it offers the

interior space of the Allspace.

The production powertrain

is yet to be confirmed but it is

expected to be faithful to the

concept’s: dual electric motors
with a combined output of

around 300bhp and a promised

range of around 310 miles. VW

will limit top speed to 112mph.

The ID SUV will be built in

Europe, the US and China,

cementing its status as a truly

global model and a kingpin of

VW’s rapid EV roll-out.

Drive goes to the rear

axle through a seven-speed

single-clutch gearbox. Pagani

reckons the weight saving

of around 30kg over a dual-

clutch ’box justifies its use.

Performance details

haven’t been released yet but

Pagani says the BC Roadster

is capable of generating

u p to 1 .9 g of co nti n u o u s

longitudinal acceleration,

with peaks of up to 2.2g.

J u st 4 0 exa m p l e s of th e

BC Roadster will be made,

each priced at €3,085,

(about £2.8 million) before

taxes. That’s more than three

times the price of the first

Huayra coupé, but Pagani

says it has no shortage of

customers.
