NYLANDER
Having studied history andpoliticsatTheUniversityof
Manchester (and thinking she might go into law), it wasn’t until
her mid-twenties that ELLE’s new beauty director decided to turn
her make-up obsession into a career. Her beauty icon is Helena
Christensen, while Chanel perfume forever reminds her why she
fell in love with the industry: ‘Cristalle takes me right back to my
GCSEs – my uniform was drenched with the stuff.’ Katy directed
the monochrome shoot on p228 and her first column is on p246

Originally set on becoming a writer, Karen
credits her art-director husband with opening
her eyes to photography. She describes her
home state of Michigan as ‘the most boring
place in the world’, but its plainness drives her
imagination. Based in Tribeca, New York, she
flits between London and Paris, shooting for
Numéro and Rollacoaster. The one thing
she’d tell her 16 -year-old self? ‘You’re never
going to have boobs, so stop waiting.’ Karen
photographed the Soft Power shoot on p184

The first and only fashion journalist
awarded a Pulitizer Prize, Robin is a
leading cultural voice and fashion
critic for The Washington Post. The
Princeton graduate believes real
power ‘is based on truth and the
people you can reach with it’.
Recently, she’s given up sugar in
solidarity with her overweight
pooch, Oscar. ‘I say, “Buddy, I feel
your pain.”’ Robin introduces the
Fashion Power List on page p142
