Hi and welcome to our new column, Sleeper
Bae, where we intro you to an obsession you
don’t yet have but soon will. Let’s start with this
imminent internet boyfriend and costar of
The Goldfinch (out September 13), shall we?

THE OLIVER
TWIST
“ I g re w u p re a l l y
poor. There was a
point when we lived
in a tent for a year.
Then we lived in
motels. I went to
school from motels.
I spent the most time
in a small trailer
with my six brothers
and sisters. I always
looked at acting
as therapy, but I
was also driven by
wanting more for
myself and my family.
I just bought my
parents a beautiful
home.”

THAT HIGH-
LOW LOVE
“My fiancée has
nothing to do with the
industry, and I find
that to be relaxing
and peaceful.
We a l s o c o m e f ro m
two different sides of
the tracks, like Romeo
and Juliet. She grew
up in a diplomat
kind of life, where
they had bodyguards
and all that stuff.”

NEW BEARD,
WHO DIS?
“My character in
The Goldfinch
becomes this sweet,
sad alcoholic.
He’s a heavier-set
guy, so I was like,
I’ll just eat pizza and
let myself go.
I had a beard that I
let get scraggly.
There’s something
telling about a man
who just doesn’t take
care of himself.”
