The life of an

ARTIST

A

TALENTED painter from 10 The
Queen’s Own Gurkha Logistic
Regiment has seen his work
showcased around Aldershot Garrison.
Pte Shankar Gurung’s pictures have
been displayed in the cookhouse at St
Omer Barracks as part of a project to
update the facility's decor.
The 28-year-old came to the
attention of commanders when he
started posting images of his work
on social media and he has now been
given his own studio in the Connaught
Community Centre.
“I always enjoyed sketching,” he
told Soldier. “But two years ago I
decided to teach myself to paint by
watching online tutorials.
“I do it all in my spare time after
work. It’s very relaxing when it's quiet
and I'm painting in my studio – it’s
like art therapy.
“But I also feel very proud that my
work is being displayed publicly.”
Pte Gurung’s next projects include
portraits of Military Cross holder
Cpl Kylie Swanepoel (nee Watson,
RAMC) and Frank Jefferson, who was
awarded the Victoria Cross at Monte
Cassino in 1944.

troops coordinate their recruitment and
engagement activities.
Developed by Home Command, Minerva

involved in event planning. It can be

MEDICAL STANDARDS
■ UK TROOPS have helped roll out a new
qualification for multinational personnel
headed for UN missions. The buddy first aid
course is the equivalent of the Army’s Matt
3 and is part of the effort to create common
medical protocols.

THE clues on the spine of last
month's magazine would
have been familiar to
those intrigued by the
underwater world.
Finger, Flowerpot,
Honeycomb and Hump
are all the names of
different types of coral.
This month we have
teamed up with Worthing-
based jeweller and designer Jana
Reinhardt (www.janareinhardt.
com) to offer one lucky reader
two handcrafted sterling silver
necklaces – perfect for summer
occasions or for that special
person in your life.
To be in with a chance of
scooping both of them, tell us
what links the words on the side
of this month’s issue.
Answers – including a
daytime telephone number – to
the usual postal address or
[email protected]
by August 30. Good luck.
