Riflemen show Nato allies what they are made of...

T

HE baking battle grounds of
Lithuania proved a challenging
backdrop for troops from 3rd
Battalion, The Rifles as they joined
Nato allies on Exercise Iron Wolf.
More than 100 soldiers from
Salamanca Company travelled east for
the brigade-level test, which included
personnel from Germany, Norway and
Poland as well as the host nation.
The British contingent saw action in
a light infantry role and were able to
showcase their skills as anti-armour
ambush specialists in a training
package that focused on the ability to
plan and carry out defensive actions.
“It was a really interesting exercise
in terms of dealing with the climate,”

said company 2iC Capt Calum Ashurst.
“We faced temperatures of more
than 30 degrees Celsius and were
operating in swamp forest.
“The guys were able to use their
dismounted skills and were up to their
waists at times but we really showed
the other countries what our riflemen
can do.”
Such efforts in the swamp, which
was deemed to be impossible to
traverse by foreign troops, drew
high praise from the Lithuanians’
commanding officer, who said that
Britain should be proud of 3 Rifles and
their capabilities.
“They were exceptional in terms
of their motivation,” added Lt Col

FUNDRAISING

FEARLESS

FANS of Prince Harry and wife Megan
have raised thousands for bereaved
Army children. A group – aptly
named SussexSquad – launched a
cash drive on Twitter and military
charity Scotty’s Little Soldiers was
one of the benefi ciaries. It follows
the charity receiving donations at
the royal wedding last year. Mum-
of-two Nikki Scott, who formed
the organisation after losing
husband Cpl Lee Scott (RTR) in
Afghanistan, said: “We are once
again overwhelmed.” Visit

Locations for the filming in mid-

to have their faces on camera and
those who just want to blend into the
background,” said Lt Col Kevin Bingham

Training Command.
