MLB: Bosox end eight-game losing skid

Rick Porcello pitched six innings of one-run
ball, Sam Travis hit a two-run homer and the Red
Sox halted their eight-game losing streak with a
7-5 victory over the struggling Royals in Boston.
In St. Petersburg, Fla., rookie Bo Bichette^
homered and scored both runs, Jacob Waguespack
pitched six impressive innings and Toronto ended
the Rays’ six-game winning streak 2-0.
In Pittsburgh, Christian Yelich hit two
home runs and took over the major league lead
with 39, powering Milwaukee past the Pirates 9-7.
In Minneapolis, Miguel Sano’s pinch-hit,
two-run homer in the ninth inning gave Minne-
sota a 5-3 victory over Atlanta.
In San Francisco, Anthony Rendon drove
in a run and stole home to give the Nationals a
4-0 win over the Giants.
In Phoenix, Ariz., Vince Velasquez gave up
two runs in seven innings and the Phillies scored
a run in six different innings to de-fang the Dia-
mondbacks 7-3 and keep pace with the Nationals
in the NL wild-card race.

HOOPS: Carter to play record 22nd year

Vince Carter agreed to terms on a one-year con-
tract to return to the Hawks for his record 22nd season.
The 42-year-old Carter never wavered in his

desire to play with someone this season. He is
tied with Robert Parish, Kevin Garnett, Kevin
Willis and recently retired Dirk Nowitzki — all
of whom played for 21 seasons — for the longest
career in NBA history. If he plays in a game in
2020, Carter will be the first player in NBA his-
tory to appear in a game in four different de-
cades, according to Elias Sports Bureau.
The United States men’s basketball team,
whose gold-medal drought at the Pan American
Games continued after a loss in the semifinals,
won a bronze medal with a 92-83 win over the
Dominican Republic. Seton Hall star Myles
Powell helped put the game away with a layup in
the waning minutes.
The Grizzlies hired former Notre Dame
women’s associate head coach Niele Ivey as one
of the new assistants on Taylor Jenkins’ staff.
There are now nine women coaches in the NBA.

ETC.: Messi to miss U.S. exhibitions

Lionel Messi will miss Barcelona’s exhibition
games in the United States against Napoli after
leaving his first preseason training session with
the club because of a strained right calf.
Wayne Rooney is in talks with Derby
County about joining the English Championship
team as player-coach, according to multiple out-
lets in the United Kingdom.

Rangers South just added an-
other member, and this one has
something to prove.
Defenseman Kevin Shatten-
kirk, who was bought out last
week by the Rangers, has agreed
to a one-year, $1.75 million con-
tract with the Lightning. In his
first comments since the buy-
out, Shattenkirk expressed dis-
pleasure about how things
ended on Broadway.
“I was pretty pissed off about
it,” Shattenkirk said, according
to the Associated Press.
The 30-year-old New Roch-
elle native’s rocky two-year
homecoming came to an end as
the Rangers needed salary-cap
relief after big summer acquisi-
tions of Artemi Panarin and Ja-
cob Trouba. The Rangers
bought out the final two years of
Shattenkirk’s four-year deal,
which carried a $6.65 million
cap hit. That leaves $1,483,333 of
dead money on the Rangers’ cap
next season before it balloons to
more than $6 million for 2020-21
then drops back to $1,433,333 for
two more years.
With Trouba, Adam Fox and
Tony DeAngelo all on the right
side of the Rangers’ blue line,
Shattenkirk didn’t have a defi-
nite role after two subpar sea-
sons which began with a knee
injury suffered during his first
training camp with the team.
“I think I have a huge chip on
my shoulder right now,” Shat-
tenkirk said, per the AP. “It
didn’t work out with injuries and
performance and with the way
the direction of the team, the
way that kind of deteriorated
from when I signed on July 1
[2017] to now.”
This wasn’t the first time the
Lightning tried to acquire the

defenseman. In 2017, the club
reportedly attempted to get
Shattenkirk from the Blues and
sign him long term before the
trade deadline, but Shattenkirk
vetoed the deal. After being
pursued by the Rangers, Shat-
tenkirk was ultimately dealt to
the Capitals before signing
with the Rangers as an unre-
stricted free agent that sum-
mer.
Shattenkirk joins a long list of
former Rangers who have

joined the Lightning in recent
years — Ryan Callahan, Anton
Stralman, Brian Boyle, Dan Gi-
rardi, Ryan McDonagh and J.T.
Miller.
Since he was drafted 14th
overall by the Avalanche in
2007, Shattenkirk has appeared
in 609 NHL games over nine
seasons. He has totaled 75
goals and 274 assists — 127 of
which have come on the
power play.
