Jets add more

O-line depth

By BRIAN COSTELLO

Jets general manager Joe
Douglas continued to ad-
dress depth on the offensive
line Monday by swinging a
trade with the Ravens for
guard Alex Lewis.
The Jets sent a condi-
tional seventh-round pick
in 2020 to Baltimore, ac-
cording to a source.
Lewis, 27, was on the
verge of being cut by the
Ravens. He actually posted
a farewell message to Balti-
more earlier Monday on In-
stagram.
This is the second move
Douglas has swung in the
last week in an attempt to
bolster the offensive line,
which has been an after-
thought for the Jets for the
last decade. He convinced
center Ryan Kalil to come
out of retirement and join
the Jets on Thursday.

Douglas must have been
worried that Lewis would
be claimed on waivers by
the Cardinals or 49ers. The
Jets are third in the waiver
order. Lewis started 18
games for the Ravens over
two seasons.
The 2016 fourth-round
pick out of Nebraska has
had trouble staying healthy.
Lewis had just been cleared
after opening training camp
on the physically unable to
perform list following off-
season shoulder surgery. A
sprained ankle sidelined
him for six weeks in 2016
and he missed the 2017 sea-
son with a shoulder injury
that required surgery. Last
year, he missed two games
with a neck injury.
The Jets have Kelechi Os-
emele and Brian Winters
starting at guard. Lewis
likely will be fighting to be
a backup.

L. Williams sits

as a precaution

By ZACH BRAZILLER

The Jets defensive front
had a different look Monday
afternoon — one they would
not like to get used to. Leon-
ard Williams, bothered by a
sore hip, wasn’t in action.
“We decided to take him
out, not have him practice
today,” Jets coach Adam
Gase said. “He had some irri-
tation in his hip, so we’re just
doing some kind of preven-
tative things, rehab-type
stuff.”
Gase said he believes the
hip has been bothering Wil-
liams and he was practicing
through it. He didn’t sound
overly concerned. Another
starter, Steve McLendon,
also didn’t practice. He had
an excused absence.
Without Williams and
McLendon, rookie Quinnen
Williams and Nathan Shep-
herd got most of the first-
team reps.

➤New center Ryan Kalil
is still getting familiar with
his surroundings and didn’t
practice Monday. Instead, he
stood with the offensive
coaches during team drills as
he continues to learn the
new offense and getting fa-

miliar with his new team-
mates.
“He seems like a smart guy,
so I’m sure he’ll get it pretty
fast,” Sam Darnold said.
Gase said Kalil would have
a better chance to play in the
team’s second preseason
game than in Thursday’s
meeting against the Giants.
“We’re going to take it one
day at a time,” Gase said.
“We have a plan in pencil,
but we’ll be smart about
this.”

➤Gase remained tight-
lipped about his plans for the
preseason opener, because
he has yet to address it with
his players. But he did say he
likes having four preseason
games at his disposal, espe-
cially for a team with so
much youth.
“We have a young team
and this is our first year in
the program, so we need to
play a little bit,” Gase said.

➤The Jets claimed CB
Alex Brown and waived
WR Quadree Henderson.
Brown was waived by the
Eagles on Sunday.
