Thankyouforat lastlayingtorest
themyththatyoumustturnoffyour
camera’simage-stabilisingsystem
beforeusinga cameraona tripod.
I firstencounteredthismyth,a few
yearsago.I hadoneof myLumix
camerasona tripod,andsetat a
politedistancefromanothergroup
of photographers.AsI waitedfor
thesunsettodevelop,I couldhear
oneof theotherphotographersashe
offeredadviceontheuseof graduated
filters,andtheselectionanduseof
lenses.InitiallyI thoughthewas
perhapsbeinga bitassertive,butthat
hewasalsotryingtogivegoodadvice
totheotherphotographers.ThenI
heardhimtrampingtowardsme.He
bentdowna littleandbegantoclosely
examinemycamera:‘Youcan’tdo
that.Yourimagestabiliseris on.It
mustbeoff.’
If youcountmypreviousMinoltaA
as a mirrorless camera, then I had

alreadybeenusingstabilisedcameras
ontripodsforyears,soI sawnoreason
toturnit off.Mypoliterefusalfurther
enragedhim.Hispartingcomment
was:‘Onlyanidiotwouldtrytotakea
sunset,withoutgraduatedfilters.’
SometimelaterI tooka seriesof
testshotswiththestabiliser‘on’and
‘off’.Evenwhentheywereexamined
at 200%,I couldseenodifference
betweenthem.Atthenextcamera
clubmeeting,whenI askedsomeof
theDSLRusers,theydidn’tthinkthatit
wasanissuewiththeircameraseither.
I wouldalsoliketocomplimentAP
onthemixtureof subjectsthatare
addressedin mosteditions.I likethe
waythatyoureviewoldDSLRs,as
possiblesecond-handpurchases,
onanequalfootingwithtoday’s
technologicalmiracles.And,yes,asa
mirrorlessuserI verymuchenjoyed
the‘MirrorlessSpecial’ issue (18 May).

buthastoomuchdistortion
(withoutcorrection),giving
poorJPEGs.I amlooking
forsomethingmuch
smallerandlighterwith
verygoodJPEGimage
quality,in-camera
keystonecorrection,
andverygoodimage
stabilisation.Butonly
Olympus does all that. My

Olympus’s20MPmodels
willfill A3at 300 ppi,
but16MPcamerassuch
astheOM-DE-M5II and
E-M10IIIarelimitedto
15.4x 11.5in atthis
outputresolution.Their
fileswouldinsteadhave
tobeprintedat280ppi
tocoverA3,butI doubt
manyobserverswould
spot the difference.

However,asyoualso
wantsomethingsmaller
thanyourSony,this
narrowsyoudown
furthertotheE-M10or
E-M5lines,whichI’dpair
withthesuperb12-
40mmf/2.8PRO.
Thehigher-endE-M
MarkII (£800)offers
severaladvantages,such
asa fullyarticulated
screenandweather-
sealing.Butit’salmost
fiveyearsold.TheE-M
MarkIIIis muchcheaper,
at£500bodyonly,and
hasa newer,easier-to-
useinterfaceforfeatures
likeKeystoneCorrection.
SoI’dsuggestwaitingfor
theE-M5II’spromised
replacement,andmake
a decisionthen.
If you’rewillingto
forgoin-bodyIS,both
theX-T3andX-T
aresuperbanddeliver
excellentJPEGimage
quality,buttheX-T3isn’t
muchsmallerthanyour
SonyAlpha7RII.Using
smallprimeswithyour
Sonyis analternative,
butlimitsyourshooting
options.Sometimes
there’snoperfectchoice
