Kingston Nucleum USB-C hub

● £60 ● http://www.kingston.com

APPLE’S latest slimline MacBook Pros are great for
photographers on the move, being lightweight and powerful with
accurate, wide-colour-gamut screens. But their lack of card
readers and conventional USB sockets is infuriating, forcing users
to buy external dongles that plug into their USB-C ports and add
those essential connectors back. Kingston’s wonderfully named
Nucleum USB-C hub is a good solution. It’s from a reputable
brand and at £60, it’s not too expensive. It includes SD and
MicroSD card slots, two USB 3.0 inputs, an
HDMI output, and two USB-C ports, one
of which can be used to pass power to your
laptop. Most importantly, it’s reliable and gives
fast data transfer speeds.

Benro FH100M2 Filter Holder

● £120 ● http://www.benroeu.com

WE’VE seen
several attempts
to reinvent the
humble fi lter
holder recently,
but Benro’s
FH10 0M2 is
one of the most
successful. It
uses standard
100mm-wide
fi lters that are
installed into
frames, allowing
easy and
precise geared
positioning of
graduated fi lters. Two frames are included – one square for an ND
fi lter, and one rectangular for a grad – while adapters are supplied
for lenses with 82mm and 77mm threads. A slim 82mm polariser
can be installed into a rotating mount that’s easily adjusted from
behind the camera; photographers shooting
with ultra-wideangles should consider the
FH100M2B kit, which uses a 95mm polariser.
Overall this is a cleverly designed piece of kit
that mostly works very well.
