In 1973, as a 13-year-old pupil, I
was introduced to photography at my
secondary school by the art teacher
Brian Parkhurst. That was the start of
my 46-year passion for photography,
which grew into a career, and a
46-year friendship with that teacher.
This year on 10 May, Brian lost
his battle with cancer leaving many
former students, photographers who
benefi ted from his knowledge and
teaching, and friends and family
heartbroken. Brian was a pioneer with
regard to teaching photography in the
early 1970s at a secondary school,
where he had to fi ght for every penny
needed to teach photography and set
up a darkroom. My school at that time
was a collection of kids who failed
their 11+ and were neither bright
enough for high school or grammar
school. I believe that because of
his drive, we (Charter Secondary
Comprehensive School in Barnsley,
South Yorks) were one of the fi rst
schools in the country to have
O-level photography exams.
His passion continued throughout
his life – he worked as an archivist for
Penistone history and camera clubs as

well as Wentworth Castle. His own
fascination was recording local village
and folk interest as well as pursuing
infrared photography. He was an
incredibly talented photographer but
hated any kind of fuss and avoided
praise, preferring his students to take
the kudos. He was and is my hero and
guru who would not allow anyone to
become bigger than their work, and
always had a joke or (terrible) pun
ready to put a smile on your face.
Photography needs more people like
Brian who can create and pass on this
passion for our art and lead the young
on a creative route and even careers.
He is a sad loss to photography in
the UK.
Roy Cullen

This is a touching tribute, Roy, and
has made me refl ect upon how
often I have heard readers tell me
that their photography passion was
kindled by a teacher at school. Also
see the letter from Mike Gosling,
opposite. I’d love to hear from other
readers who also owe their love of
photography to a school teacher

Blow the bridge
In your review of Nikon’s
Coolpix P1000 (AP 1
June), you make an unfair
comparison with the Sony
RX10 IV (which I own), in
that the latter only offers
24-600mm zoom range,
without mentioning that
the Sony has a 1in sensor.
This gives it a 4x area
advantage over Nikon’s

1/2.3in sensor. I’ve owned
a superzoom camera
with this sensor size and,
despite raw shooting, have
found it to be seriously
lacking in the image quality
department. No serious
wildlife photographer, let
alone a professional, would
touch this camera with the
proverbial bargepole.

Buying guide idea
The photo nerd in me loves
your Buying Guide, but
how about reviewing the
performance of some of
the older lenses in the
guide. I am using a Canon
50mm f/1.4 USM on my
Canon RP, a classic lens,
but how does it compare
to more modern lenses?
Some people use fi lm

camera lenses on adapters

  • how well does that work?
    How about comparing
    a 50mm f/2 Leica
    Summicron on a digital
    camera vs the Canon lens
    above? Or maybe fi lm
    camera lenses should stay
on fi lm cameras, as they
    were designed to do?
    Andrew S Redding

The Buying Guide is a
listing of new cameras
and lenses currently
available. We try to keep
it as compact as possible,
but if we were to start
listing all the infi nite
combinations of old
lenses on new bodies
the list would fi ll the
magazine and we’d need
an army to test them
all. That said, we do
regularly write about
using old lenses and
we have an entire issue
devoted to them coming
up in a few weeks’ time

All a blur
Why is it that so many
photographers think they
are being creative and
clever by turning running
water into a complete blur?
AP’s 8 June cover image is
an example of an attractive
photograph ruined by the
rendering of running water
into clouds and cotton
wool. It looks awful.
