Artist’s Back to Basic – July 2019

(Martin Jones) #1
from different view points, and
close-ups, are more interesting
to me than general scenes.
With many beach paintings I
like to paint a canvas black first

  • and then paint bright colour
over the black, using the depth
of the dark ground to give weight
to the elements of the picture.
    This way, highlights of colour

and light are quickly visible and
dynamic. A painting can have
an immediacy in its nature, or it
can be worked more slowly ...
applying the colour layer by layer.
I like both oils and acrylics and
I am happy to try using other
materials and techniques for
different subjects and effects.
Working in my studio is a daily
