Artist’s Back to Basic – July 2019

Overglazing
Overglazing is used to boost the
colour intensity and add a glow
to your subject. If you have (for
example), a subject that is red and
you want to add further interest,
intensity and glow to the colour,
apply a transparent diluted lemon or
yellow wash to certain areas, allowing

the red to shine through the yellow
overglaze. Below is an example of
a pomegranate with overglazing.
Painting fine detail and realistic
subjects requires Practice, Patience,
Perseverance and Experimentation.
The more you practice the more
skilled you will become and the
more confidence you will gain. n
