1 Coat the substrate with gesso, heat dry,
then mix Cadmium Red and Paynes
Grey together to make a blood red
colour. Apply over the top.

2 Randomly rub with candle wax, then
paint a layer of tinting base mixed with
Burnt Umber and Raw Umber. Dry, then
rub with a kitchen towel to expose the
colour underneath.

3 Mix Quinacridone Gold and Paynes Grey
with water, and paint over the surface.
With a heat gun and kitchen roll, dab
and dry simultaneously to create dirty
speckles.

to finish the project: Give the boards a light
coat of Matte Medium to seal and cut to the size
you need. Cut a circular hole to create a porthole
effect, cut a circle and paint with chalky paints in
the same shade as the large blue mount, stencil
the background. Stamp and colour the seahorse
and words. Mount the layers like the old posters
and paint the edge of the backing board using a
sponge to create a worn metallic effect. Die-cut
letters to make up your signage, assemble the
pieces together and create your imaginary poster
so it looks as though you can peer through the
floor of a pier and onto the water below.

4 Apply a thin layer of crackle medium,
letting it dry naturally or with some
warmth from a heat gun (held away
from the surface so the medium
doesn’t get hot).

5 When completely dry, apply more
candle wax randomly over the surface.
Apply a layer of Titanium White paint.
Leave to dry and crackle naturally.

6 Repeat the rubbing back as in step 2.
Use a scoreboard to score lines, run
sandpaper down them and blend brown
Distress ink down the edges to create
boards.
