In the mantra R. V , 1-123-8 ‘Sadrsiradya Sadrsridu
Swo’ means as per Sayana’s commentary that today’s
Alias is equal to tomorrow’s Ahas on all days. This
can happen” only at - the equator. Secondly it is
stated ‘Dirgham Sachantam Varunasya Dhama ’ i.e.,
the path of the Sun is at the greatest distance. This
suggests the solstitial day. ‘Ana- vadhya Trimsatam
Yojananam’: Anavadhya means ‘Suddha’ suggesting
the corrected value and trimsatam yojana meaning-

modern value being 81 minutes) and this is the
corrected value of the duration of twilight for an
equatorial observer on the solstitial day.
In connection with the explanation of the above
mantra Sayana has made three astronomical
statements: 1. That the twilight begins at 21 ghatis

yojanas, the circumference of the earth, in the course
of a day and 3. That when it is sun-rise at Lanka, it
is sunset at Siddhapura, midnight at Romaka and
mid-day at Yamakoti. I have already shown that

to prove that the Surya Siddhanta is entirely based
on the Vedas and not on Greek astronomy. The third
statement Sayana himself says is from Aryabhatta.
He quotes the verse in full from Aryabhatta. This idea

It is also stated in our Ithihasa the Mahabharata.
The above explanation of the Rig-Veia mantra, with
the help of Sayana’s commentary must convince
any impartial reader that the Indian Siddhantas are
direct descendents of the Vedas and have nothing
to do with the Greek astronomy. On the other hand,
if there be any similarity in words etc., it must go
to show the indebtedness of the Greek astronomy
to the, India astronomical works and that too in a-
