BE AN EARLY BIRD
Set your alarm for an early workout
wake-up call. Doing exercise while
everyone else sleeps sets you up for
the day, so you can relax when you
hit the breakfast buffet or pool bar.
‘Working out early in the morning
is a great way to kick-start your
fitness routine on holiday,’ says Ian
Twitchen, head of product at Total
Fitness (totalfitness.co.uk). ‘As well
as instant cardio benefits, getting
in a half-hour HIIT session burns
calories throughout the day – known
as the “after-burn” effect – meaning you
can enjoy the rest of your day guilt-free.’
Go for a run on the beach, head to
the courts for a tennis match, or swim 20
lengths of the pool before it gets too busy.

WORKOUT TO GO
If you prefer to have a lie-in when you’re
on holiday, you can still get in a morning
workout – squeeze in a quick training
session after breakfast and before going
to the beach or pool. Pack a skipping
rope in your luggage and hit the balcony
for a calorie-blasting cardio session.
Each morning, skip fast for about 60
seconds, have a 30-second break and
repeat until you’ve reached a skipping
time of five to 10 minutes.
‘Skipping is a handy holiday activity
as the rope can fit easily in your suitcase
and can easily be incorporated into your
early morning workout,’ says Twitchen.
‘It delivers some incredible health benefits,
helping to get that heart rate up and
tone your muscles.’
