OZONE ALERT

You feel it in your lungs but pollution can damage
your arteries and heart health too, reveals new
research. American scientists studied a group of
6,000 healthy, middle-aged people from six cities
across the US for six years. Results, published in
the journal Environmental Health Perspectives
showed a link between long-term exposure to
ground-level ozone and atherosclerosis (‘furring
up’ of the arteries), which can lead to increased
risk of cardiovascular mortality. Ozone is formed
when emissions from cars and chemical waste
come into contact with sunlight. To protect
yourself, avoid exercising near heavy traffic or in
the middle of the day when pollution levels peak.
Time to switch to a scenic, early-morning run!
