EXPLORE THE SHORE

Explore the Shore with Cornwall Wildlife Trust in August

PICTURE: NIKI CLEAR

Falmouth hosts one of the
country’s biggest regattas,
dating back at least to 1837.
Over that time Falmouth
Week has grown to a full ten
days of entertainment on
land and sea and, this year,
in the air! Three exciting
aerobatic display teams –
The Blades, AeroSuperBatics
Wingwalkers and
Strikemaster Pair will
perform over Falmouth
Seafront in the early evening
of 14 August.
It’s all part of a packed
programme of events
throughout Falmouth which
begin on Saturday 10 August
with a free Comic and Movie
Fest with lots of fun for kids

and the chance to have your
photo taken with a film
superhero. The jolly Falmouth
Carnival Parade starts off in
the early evening from the
Rugby Club and processes to
Events Square – at the heart
of most of the shoreside action
during Falmouth Week.
Many events during the
festival are free including
the Science in the Square
activities (Friday 16 August),
the fireworks display (16
August) and the chance to
watch the thrilling Dragon
Boat racing on 18 August.
There are some musical
events being held which are
ticketed –Spandau Ballet’s
Martin Kemp plays DJ for

a night of 80s music (16
August), Queen tribute band
The Bohemians perform on
17 August and there’s a night
of Ska music on Thursday
15 August.
The sailing competitions
are still at the heart of
Falmouth Week. The regatta
features up to seven days of
fleet racing for yachts and
dayboats in the expansive
waters of Falmouth Bay and
the lower Fal Estuary of the
Carrick Roads. Racing takes
place each day from Sunday
11 August to the following
Saturday, with daily and
series prizes.
The Ancasta Champagne
Race on the Wednesday dates

back 60 years and rewards
winners with bottles of
champagne. The long coastal
race for offshore yachts will
encompass the whole bay and
extend up the coast in the
direction of Gull Rock. The
finish is usually to the west
side of Pendennis headland.
