Cornwall Life – October 2019

(Barry) #1

(^106) ŠCornwall Life: August 2019
A DAY IN PARADISE
S
pending some time on
our amazing beaches
is one of my favourite
things about living in
Cornwall, but there’s an awful lot
more to the Duchy, even on the
sunniest days.
At Eden we feel a big
responsibility to holidaymakers
as they plan their precious weeks
of R&R – for many visitors to
Cornwall we’re one of their big
days out, so we need to provide
tons of fun as well as, hopefully, a
bit of education and inspiration.
No doubt many tourists soaking
up the sun on our beaches are
more aware than ever of the
global climate crisis – there’s
nothing like some thinking time
on the beach to make you think
about our weather, sea levels, and
the plastic that keeps washing up
on our shores.
So this summer we’re telling
the Earth Story – we want to play
our part in helping everyone,
whether they’re lucky enough to
live here in Cornwall or they’re
visiting for a week in the sun, to
feel like a guardian of our planet.
Everyone coming to Eden this
summer will share in the story of
the evolution of life on Earth, and
of how precarious that life is today.
But we’ll also be sharing what
we’ve learned about how even the
smallest of individual actions can
make a change for the better.
It’s our most important summer
programme ever. We all know
that mankind has caused a set
of connected crises – the climate
emergency, the loss of species
of plants and animals, and the
pollution in our air, soil and seas.
But with interactive exhibitions,
mind-blowing virtual reality, an
ice age mammoth skeleton and
a face to face encounter with a
majestic lowland gorilla, we aim
to provide not just a great day out,
but a great opportunity to make
a difference.
There will be reminders of
what we’ve lost, but also of what
we can still save – and what
each and every one of us can do
to help. The Eden team has put
together a brilliant list of top tips
suggesting small changes we
can all make – in the past couple
of years the UK has reduced the
number of plastic bags in use
by nine billion, so we know we
can do great things if we set our
minds to it.
We’re also very aware at Eden
that we don’t have all the answers

  • we’re all still learning – and I’ll
look forward to all the ideas that
I know we’ll receive from the
thousands of people who will visit
us during their holidays. As we
always say at Eden – the future
    remains ours to make!
