doesn’t accept people staying
with dogs, though you can take
a dog to Tresco for a day trip
providing it is kept on a lead. For
most of our married life we have
had dogs so staying on Tresco has
been impossible.
This presented me with
a problem when I began
photographing the islands for a
book I was putting together. As a
photographer I like to photograph
places in the golden hour, just
after sunrise or before sunset but
I wasn’t able to stay on Tresco
(without leaving Sarah and the
dogs) and the boats from St
Mary’s don’t set off until 10am,
long after the best light for
photography.
On one September trip we were
staying on St Mary’s and I noticed
the ferry boats were running a

island life

The first thing you will discover on the Isles of Scilly is that

its residents consider themselves separate from Cornwall,

and exploring this sub-tropical tip of Britain, it is easy to see

why, as photographer DAVID CHAPMAN discovers

‘The south end of Tresco
is dominated by sand
dunes and beautiful white
sandy beaches. Even in
the middle of a sunny
day these beaches are
great for photography’
