‘booze-cruise’ to Tresco in the
evening. Not being much of a
drinker or a sailor the thought of
getting a boat to Tresco to drink a
lot before returning late at night
didn’t appeal but I did wonder
whether I could catch the ferry
and do some photography. This
idea was thwarted because the
ferries weren’t going out until it
was almost dark so I enquired
about the possibility of going out
on the 10am boat and returning
with the boozers at 11pm. It was
going to be a long day!
Luckily Tresco is a very
beautiful and diverse island. It
has the world-famous Abbey
Gardens, which was built in the
19th century around the remains
of a Benedictine Abbey. This is
a wonderful garden with many
hundreds of species of plant from
around the world arranged to
make the most of the surrounding
views whilst also having plenty
of intimate spots for resting and
reflecting.
Photographers can use the
colourful flowers as well as the
various garden statues, shelters
and the remains of The Abbey as
focal points. There is also plenty
of wildlife around the gardens.
Look no further than the café
for red squirrels which were
intentionally introduced here
a few years ago. Stick insects,
which were unintentionally
introduced with tree ferns from
New Zealand, can also be found
in the gardens; try the bushes
around the Valhalla Museum of
shipwrecked figureheads. Finally
there are plenty of common
garden birds which are literally
hand-tame. House sparrow, song
thrush, chaffinch, blackbird,
robin and others can be
photographed in the café garden
or bathing in the water feature in
the garden.
The south end of Tresco is
dominated by sand dunes and
beautiful white sandy beaches.
Even in the middle of a sunny
day these beaches are great for
St Mary’s: the view of Porth Hellick
from Giant’s Castle is a good one
Bryher: the view of Bryher from
Gweal Hill is great at sunset
St Martin’s: Higher Town Bay is
very beautiful
St Agnes: I enjoy the view of St Agnes
from Gugh particularly at sunrise
