After a busy, sweaty, active day do you ever feel tired or a bit dizzy, and your mouth
is dry or gross? Maybe you haven’t used the washroom for a while? You may be
dehydrated. Dehydration happens when your body loses a lot of fluids. On average
the human body is made up of 60 percent water and you need to drink more than you
lose to stay hydrated. But if you don’t have clean drinking water, then what?

Say you’re out camping with your friends and you run out of clean drinking water.
You could go to the store and buy drinking water, or you could make a water purifier
from things found at your campsite. The water from lakes, rivers and oceans are not
safe to drink, so make sure you treat it before you drink it.

Children should try to drink around six
cups of water each day, but increase the
amount if you are playing sports or being
really active, especially if it’s hot.

FACT 1 in 9 people do not have access to safe drinking water.

FACT Every minute a child dies of a water-related disease.

Potable Water

How much water should you

drink each day?

With more than half your body weight being
water, you need to replace it often, especially
when you are being active. You can get some
of the water from the foods you eat, like meat,
vegetables and especially fruit, but you still need
to drink water.

FACT Humans can only survive 2-3 days without water.

Remember to try to avoid drinks with lots of sugar or
caffeine. You can drink soft drinks, but not too many
because caffeine is a diuretic, which causes you to go to
the washroom and lose that water you were storing!
