The Grasshopper
Running through a field
on a hot summer day will
make grasshoppers pop up
above the tall grasses.
Their humming noise
is caused by the male grasshopper,
who rubs his hind leg against his wing.
It is often said that it mimicks
a bow playing a violin.

The Cicada
The sound depends
on the species. There
are many different
sounds but they are
only made by the males.
They have organs on
their abdomen called
tymbals. They pop their muscles in
and out to make the sound we hear.

The Bullfrog
Serenading his potential mate, the bullfrog has
a specific song to distinguish himself
from other suitors. The pitch and resonance
of his call depends on his health
and size. A pond of bullfrogs
can become quite loud and
their songs can be heard
from many miles or
kilometres away.

The Blue Jay
Though they
are considered
songbirds with
a soft and pleasantly
musical chirp, blue
jays are often very noisy
with squawking and jeering
to warn against predators.
They are
territorial birds.
