Five of the best

Family activities and attractions around the UK

1 Adventure Parc Snowdonia
This converted aluminium fac-
tory, formerly Surf Snowdonia, has
expanded this summer with the
Adrenaline Indoors adventure expe-
rience. This includes an artifi cial
caving course, a parkour trail and
freefall jumps, plus a soft-play area
for younger kids. Many activities are
suitable for ages fi ve-plus (some
from age seven).

2 Bolton Abbey, N. Yorkshire
This estate near Skipton has 80
miles of footpaths around the ruins
of a priory, although the real draw
is just outside, on the banks of the
River Wharfe. A large beach area is
ripe for sandcastle building, with
water shallow enough for toddlers.
Older children can swim or tackle
60 stepping stones once used by lay
workers on their way to the priory.
 Free, parking £10, boltonabbey.com

3 Treasure Trails, UK-wide
This series of more than 1,000 self-
guided treasure hunt walks in cit-
ies, villages and the countryside can
make a “boring” activity great fun

as kids solve clues, hunt treasure or
complete secret agent missions. The
trails come as an A5 booklet – by
post, or downloadable – with route,
facts and spaces to fi ll in answers.
 £6.99 each, treasuretrails.co.uk

4 Millennium Gallery, Sheffi eld
At this art and design museum, big-
name exhibitions such as Leonardo
da Vinci sit alongside permanent
displays of the city’s famous metal-
work. Running to 15 September is
John Ruskin: Art and Wonder, which
includes craft sessions, carnivals
and the iridescent rocks that fi rst
sparked his love of nature.
 Free, museums-sheffi eld.org.uk

5 Miniature Pony Centre, Devon
This Dartmoor attraction has 69
horses plus other farm animals,
birds and creepy-crawlies. There’s
stacks to do, with much of it – mini
ride-on tractors, a soft-play centre –
geared to the under-10s. Every half
hour or so, a bell invites visitors to
activities such as pony grooming, a
gymkhana display or petting time
with guinea pigs, mice and rabbits.
 Adult £8.95, 3-16s £7.95, family
£32, miniatureponycentre.com
