In brief

Watford
Welbeck fi nally makes
move to Vicarage Road

Watford have confi rmed the signing
of the former Arsenal forward
Danny Welbeck on a free transfer,
kick-starting what is expected to
be a busy fi nal day of the transfer
window. The 28-year-old England
international has agreed a contract
after fi nally joining a club that had
fi rst inquired about him a year ago,
when they were quoted a fee of £8m.
Watford also hope to complete a deal
for the Rennes winger Ismaïla Sarr,
with the two clubs close to agreeing
a fee for a player rated by his club at
£30m, £12m above the club record
paid to Burnley for Andre Gray two
years ago. They have, however,
become frustrated at the glacial
pace with which the negotiations
have been progressing, and there are
concerns that Rennes will prolong
them until the 11th hour in the hope
of receiving a higher off er from
another club either in England or
elsewhere. Simon Burnton

Leicester City
Rodgers settles deal
with Sampdoria’s Praet

a fi ve-year contract with Brendan
Rodgers’ side and will move to the
King Power Stadium if the clubs can
agree on the fi nal details of the deal.

Newcastle
Bruce moves closer
to signing of Krafth

Steve Bruce’s pursuit of a right-back
appears to be reaching a conclusion
with Sweden’s Emil Krafth ready to
complete a £5m move from Amiens.
The 25-year-old was expected to have
a medical on Tyneside yesterday and,
provided the formalities proceed
as planned, Krafth, formerly with
Helsingborg and Bologna, should be
in the squad for Sunday’s Premier
League game against Arsenal.

Manchester City
Cancelo arrives in swap
agreement with Danilo

the right-back João Cancelo
from Juventus. The Portugal
international, who is set to provide
competition to Kyle Walker, has
agreed a deal until the summer of
2025, with Danilo moving in the
opposite direction. PA Media

Arsenal
Long-server Jenkinson
heads off for Forest

Carl Jenkinson has left Arsenal
to join Nottingham Forest in the
Championship. The 27-year-old
defender, who has played once
for England and who spent eight
years at Arsenal, has moved for an
undisclosed fee and signed a three-
year contract at the City Ground.
Jenkinson’s Arsenal colleague,
the forward Eddie Nketiah , is
also expected to drop into the
Championship – to join Leeds. The
20-year-old is likely to join on loan
for the season. PA Media

Ajax
Neres agrees contract
extension until 2023

The Brazilian forward David Neres
has signed a contract extension
with Ajax in the Netherlands. Neres
had been linked with a move to
Manchester United but has agreed a

transfer window Spurs fi nally struck
a deal for the Argentina midfi elder Lo
Celso after failing with attempts to sign
Philippe Coutinho on loan from Bar-
celona, while a move for the Juventus
striker Paulo Dybala also broke down
after the Juventus forward requested
a salary of £350,000 a week.
While Lo Celso has yet to agree per-
sonal terms, he is expected to move to
north London after being withdrawn
from the Betis squad for the friendly
against Las Palmas last night.
The fee for the former Paris Saint-
Germain player would match the
amount Tottenham paid for Tanguy
Ndombele at the start of July, with
Pochettino having urged his chairman,
Daniel Levy, to back him in the transfer
market having reached the Champions
League fi nal last season. His request
appears to have been granted, with the

manager also keen on signing the Eng-
land Under-21 international Sessegnon
before the deadline passes.
Negotiations with Fulham have
dragged on all summer, with the
Championship side holding out for a
fee of nearly £30m despite Sessegnon

having only one year of his contract
remaining.
Last season’s fi rst-choice left-back,
Danny Rose, has been reintegrated into
the squad after missing Tottenham’s
tour of Asia last month “to explore
prospective opportunities with other
clubs” but it is believed Pochettino
would prefer to allow Sessegnon the
chance to take over.
The future of Christian Eriksen,
meanwhile, appears no closer to
being resolved after talks between the
Denmark midfi elder and Manchester
United broke down.
With less than 11 months of his con-
tract remaining he is thought to favour
a move to Real Madrid and could still
depart after Thursday’s Premier
League deadline as most European
leagues’ markets remain open until
the end of the month.
