Bridge evacuation ends

...But get ready for

more downpours

BrITAIN is braced for yet another
battering from severe weather as
forecasters said possible flooding
caused by further heavy rain could
pose a ‘danger to life’.
A yellow warning has been issued
across almost all areas of england and
Wales for tomorrow.
A band of heavy rain is due to move
north-eastwards, followed by heavy thun-
derstorms. In total, some areas could
receive up to two inches of rain. The met
office said: ‘There is a small chance of fast
flowing or deep floodwater caus-
ing danger to life.’
Disruption to public transport is
expected, as well as possible dam-
age to homes and businesses.
It comes a week after flash floods
devastated parts of Swaledale,
North Yorkshire, and the town of
Whaley Bridge, Derbyshire was
evacuated after the dam wall par-
tially collapsed at a nearby reser-
voir after a torrential downpour.
And the weather forecast has
prompted the Duke and Duchess
of Cambridge to stage their King’s
Cup yachting regatta a day earlier
than planned.
Kensington Palace announced
William and Kate will take part in
the event off the Isle of Wight
today rather than tomorrow, as
originally scheduled.
The couple will compete against
a host of celebrities, including
comedian John Bishop and adven-
turer Bear Grylls, when they go
head-to-head in the charity race.
Yachts taking part in the royal
event will represent causes sup-

compete on behalf of the royal
Foundation, in connection with
her work on the early years devel-
opment of children.
Today is set to be mostly dry,
with temperatures of up to 24C
(75F) in southern england and
22C (72F) further north.
Cowes is likely to have a dry
start, with temperatures reaching

20C (68F) before rain arrives in
the evening. And up to two inches
of rain is forecast across almost all
parts of the country tomorrow –
although parts of east Anglia and
Kent may stay dry.
Further weather warnings have
been issued for Saturday, with
winds of 40mph inland and 50mph
in coastal areas. Gusts of up to

60mph are expected in Wales, the
midlands and southern england.
meanwhile, heavy thunder-
storms are expected in northern
england, which could bring more
than 1.5 inches (30-40mm) of rain
within three hours.
A met office spokesman said the
unsettled pattern is likely to con-
tinue for the coming days.

MUSIC fans say they have been
left hundreds of pounds out of
pocket after a festival was can-
celled hours before the gates
were due to open.
Boardmasters festival in New-
quay, Cornwall, was due to
open yesterday but was called
off after severe weather warn-
ings. The festival was expecting
55,000 revellers, and headlin-

ers included Wu-Tang Clan and
Florence and the Machine.
Organisers yesterday promised
to refund the full ‘face value’ of
tickets – but fans were unhappy
after forking out for transport,
food and camping gear.
Ticket prices ranged from £69
for day-entry passes through
to VIP packages including five
days of camping from £370.

Fury at cancelled festival

WHALeY Bridge residents shared
hugs and shed tears of relief after
they were finally allowed back
home yesterday.
Police allowed the remaining 1,500
residents, who were evacuated last
Thursday, to return to the town after
the damaged Toddbrook reservoir
dam was declared safe.
Suzy Kelsall – whose home beside
the river Goyt would have been in the
floodwater’s path had the dam burst

  • and neighbour Kelly Baker greeted
    each other with a hug.
miss Kelsall said: ‘It’s just incredible
the town is safe and we are incredibly
grateful to the emergency services. It
was so wonderful to drive through
    Whaley again.’
miss Kelsall, who runs a tour boat on
the Peak Forest Canal – also on a
potential floodpath – was on a trip
with 40 sightseers when the evacua-
    tion happened. ‘Family and friends
were ringing me telling me: “If you are
on that boat, get off it now”,’ she said.

Paul morin, a teacher, said: ‘I had to
go back to rescue my dog Heidi, a
lurcher cross, because she was in the
house alone... and I had been visiting
my daughter.’
retired electrician Graham Arnfield,
72, who was returning home with his
wife Jane, 70, praised the emergency
services and added: ‘We’ve never eaten
out so much. We only took two plastic
bags and one holdall with clothes
when we were told to leave.’
mrs Arnfield said it had been ‘very
stressful’, adding: ‘I’ve just come out
of hospital after a brain haemorrhage.
Living out of a plastic bag isn’t nice.’

Derbyshire Police deputy chief con-
stable rachel Swann said the danger
posed by the dam ‘could not be under-
estimated’ and said repairs to the dam
are necessary – including, potentially,
a complete reconstruction.
Locals displayed ‘thank you’ signs
outside their homes for the 700 emer-
gency services and armed forces per-
sonnel who worked to shore up the
crumbling dam, which included pump-
ing out 225million gallons of water.
Prime minister Boris Johnson, who
visited the town on Friday, praised
residents’ ‘spirit and patience’ during
the stressful evacuation.
