BRIDGE MASTERCLASS

WIN

£500

PETER DONOVAN

South is declarer in 3♠ (1♠-2♠-3♠), and West
leads ♦A. how do you play to this trick, as East?
‘Do you play McKenney, partner?’ is a question
oft heard between pairs discussing their
bidding methods.
yet, surprisingly, some of those who ask don’t use
this useful convention correctly themselves. The
McKenney signal (named after its ‘inventor’) is a
very simple method of showing suit preference.
There are two situations in which it is generally
used. In the above example, East assumes that his
partner is going to make a switch at Trick Two, and
he wants to ensure that the switch is to clubs rather
than hearts; so he plays ♦2 — the McKenney signal
asking for a switch to the lower of the two suits.
If he held ♥AQ10, instead of ♣KQ10, he would play
♦9 calling for the higher-ranking suit. When he has
no preference, he plays the 6 or 4. There are occa-
sional situations where you may want the led suit
continued in order to shorten dummy’s trumps; in
these cases, you would have to play an encouraging
high card and leave partner to judge whether or not
it was a McKenney signal. We’ll look at the second
situation tomorrow.
