WEED IT AND REAP: Use nutrient-packed flowers for glowing skin

nearest forest, a word of caution.
Be aware of allergies and
always do a patch test of any
unfamiliar substance before
you apply it.
To do this, place
a small amount on the skin of
your inner arm, cover and leave
for 24 hours.
If there is any reaction, such as
redness or obvious irritation,
don’t use that ingredient.
Use recipes immediately or
within 24 hours if kept in the
fridge. If you are on medication
or pregnant, check with your
doctor before using raw or wild
ingredients.
Here are just a few of our
favourite recipes from vegan
make-up artist Em-J.

Dandelion serum

Ingredients: 6 fresh dandelion

flowers and leaves; 1 aloe

vera leaf; 1tsp vitamin E oil

(available from health food

shops)

1 Wash the flowers and

chop off the base of the

stems to remove dirt.

2 Slice the aloe vera

leaf down the middle

and scoop out gel.

3 Whizz the

dandelions and aloe in

a food processor, then

leave for one hour.

4 Using a cloth or strainer,

squeeze the gel into a bowl.

5 Gently mix in the vitamin E oil,

then apply. Store in a dark glass

jar or bottle in the fridge.

Strawberry and oat exfoliating

mask

Ingredients: 20g ground oats;

3 large ripe strawberries; 1tbsp

cream; 1 drop geranium essential

oil

1 Mash the strawberries and

combine with the oats, cream

and geranium essential oil.

2 Apply to damp skin and leave

for five minutes before rinsing

off.

Rose facial toner

Ingredients: 7 roses; 1.5l of

distilled water

Wonderfully refreshing, this can

be used as a face toner as well as

a facial spritz on hot days.

1 Gently pull the petals from the

roses, place them in a colander

and rinse with lukewarm water.

2 When the petals are clean,

put them into a pan with the

distilled water.

3 Make sure the petals are

covered. Add more water if

not. Simmer gently for 25

minutes until they have lost their

colour.

4 Leave to cool, then strain

to separate the petals from

the water.

Don’t throw the petals

away – they can be

added to a bath

that evening.

5 Pour the rose water

into a dark glass bottle

and keep in the fridge.

Spritz over skin when

you want to cool down.

TREAT ‘CHELLULITE’

AS WE age the skin of the chin

can develop lines and dimples.

Nicknamed “chellulite”, as it

resembles cellulite, it is caused

by a muscle of the chin called

the mentalis, which allows you

to pucker up and pout your

lips. Over time this muscle

weakens, curls upwards slightly

and the crease of your chin

becomes deeper.

Thankfully a Botox jab can

help. During the short

treatment, a small amount is

injected to smooth the creased

and dimpled skin.

It also helps to relax the

mentalis muscle to prevent it

from curling. Results last up to

six months.
