CRICKET: ASHES SERIES

made only one change in the
whole series, which was forced
on us by Simon Jones’ injury.
“For me, Archer comes in as a
straight swap for Jimmy
Anderson and the other 10
should be given the chance to
put right the missed
opportunities at Edgbaston.
“That includes Moeen Ali,
who seems to have been written
off by all and sundry. If he is
refreshed by the 10-day gap
between Test matches, I would
still pick him at Lord’s.
“I would wait until the squad
convenes on Monday and have
an honest conversation with
him. If the eyes are still a bit
glazed and the shoulders are
sunken, then Joe Root and
Trevor Bayliss have a decision
to make.
“But I wouldn’t be in any
hurry to drop the team’s leading
wicket-taker in Test matches
over the last 18 months.”
Stone, 25, suffered his
setback with Warwickshire and
sporting director Paul Farbrace
said: “It’s so disappointing. He
will have a scan and needs to
rest up.”

were questioning Stuart Broad
when he came back into the
side, but he stepped up – like he
has so often in the last 10 years
for England – and you can’t
question him now.
“These lads have come
back from adversity
before and the key is not
to panic. We’re back in
the same territory
as 2005,
where we
were
heavily
beaten in
the first
Test but

point of delivery, we know he
could be a real handful.
“Fingers crossed he makes an
impact, and it’s only natural
that people expect a lot of
him because he did so
well in the World Cup.
“But let’s not heap all
the responsibility on his
shoulders. As a team, as
a band of brothers,
England will be
hurting and
they have got
to step up.

of your

JUDD TRUMP has
reclaimed the world
No1 spot by knocking
Ronnie O’Sullivan off

The world champion

against Joe Perry in

“It is always good

Trump, 29, after
recording two century
breaks and four
half-centuries.
“Anyone who says
they don’t want to be
world No1 is lying.
“It’s great to be on
top of your sport and
I am very happy.
“It is nice saying you
are No3 or No4 but
there’s no other feeling
like being No1.”

STEVE HARMISON has told
England’s flops not to pile too
much pressure on Jofra Archer

  • and to “ask questions” of
    their senior citizens instead.
    Archer will make his Test
    debut against Australia at Lord’s
    next week after England’s
    dwindling reserve of fast
    bowling resources took another
hit with Olly Stone ruled out
    through injury.
    Warwickshire prospect Stone,
    who made a promising debut
    against Ireland last month, has
    aggravated a back problem and
will be out for at least a
    fortnight.
    With Jimmy Anderson (calf)
    and Mark Wood (knee) already
    crocked, speedster Archer will
    be cast as England’s magic
    bullet to remedy the crushing
    251-run first Test defeat at
    Edgbaston.
    Archer took 6-27 and reeled
    off a 93-ball hundred for
    Sussex’s second XI against
    Gloucestershire in a fitness test
    on Tuesday.
    But ex-England paceman
    Harmison, who took 17 Ashes
    wickets in the 2005 triumph,
    says Archer cannot shoulder the
burden of trying to overturn the
    1-0 deficit alone.
    He said: “No disrespect to
    Gloucestershire 2nd XI, but
    Archer has been knocking over
    18 and 19-year-olds – which is
great for his confidence, but we
still have to make sure we don’t
    ask too much of him.
“If he bowls from the Pavilion
    End, wicket-to-wicket and gets
his wrist position right at the
