Garden Railways – August 2019

(nextflipdebug5) #1

THERE’S BOUND TO BE TROUBLE.
That’s one thing that has become abun-
dantly clearer through every season I’ve
maintained my modest Canadian Pacific
Joy Division garden railway. Fortunately,
I’ve also learned that part of my enjoy-
ment in this hobby stems from working
with friends, neighbors, and colleagues to
tackle those recurring troubles.
Sure, digging in the dirt and hauling
heaps of ballast are good, healthy endeav-
ors. Just ask Rene, Cody, David, and the
rest of the Rehab Crew (perhaps not quite
yet)! But I often wondered, what would it
take to finally resolve, rather than simply
repair, some problems?

Helpful suggestions arise when a special guest arrives

That’s why I invited GR Founding
Editor Marc Horovitz to come by for a
look at our rehabilitation efforts and offer
up ideas on how to remedy a few issues
too. In the following pages, you’ll catch
a glimpse of how we used Marc’s sage

advice regarding the engineering and place-
ment of structures on the Joy Division. If
you want to discover Marc’s additional
insights, follow the companion Rehab My
