PART 1: Plow design and frame assembly
AFTER LIVING SEVERAL YEARS in a region that
receives quite a bit of snow during the winter, I decided
to build a working snow plow for my railroad. While I
love the look of rotary plows, I wanted something less
complex, still visually interesting, and functional.
My collection of reference material held the
answer. That’s where I found a suitable model in
a book about the Bradford, Bordell, and Kinzua
Railroad (Bradford, Bordell, and Kinzua, The Elma
Press, 1971), a 3' narrow gauge line that served the
early oil fields of McKean county, Pennsylvania. This
plow has a caboose-like rear platform, a stove pipe
sticking out of the roof, and an odd little cupola.
When I couldn’t locate a plan for this specific plow, I
simply created my own drawing based on dimensions
for Fn3 scale rolling stock (45mm gauge).
