me a steady stream of “Fixer Upper” or
“This Old House,” and you’ll be hard-
pressed to move me from the sofa. Sure,
I’ve been around video production long
enough to know that behind even the
simple construction task lay hours of
painstaking prep, and just as much foot-
age that’ll never see the light of day. Still,
my attraction to these shows speaks to why
I find garden railroading so captivating.
At the end of my favorite shows, the
hosts never fail to assert how the act
of planning and making (sometimes
breaking and remaking) something new
and novel becomes a cathartic, elevating
experience. What a powerful hook – one
that isn’t lost on garden railroaders!
In fact, DIY TV hosts Chip, Joanna,
Norm, and others share many of the
same industrious traits as the inspiring
DIYers you’ll find throughout GR. In this
issue, you need only look to Contribut-
ing Editor Kevin Strong’s do-it-yourself
power supply construction effort (p. 13)
for confirmation. Of course, Horticultural
Editor Nancy Norris’ suggestions for
waterscaping your railway (p. 18) all float
to the top. And when it comes to offering
sage advice for shaping-up a smooth-
running railroad, there’s certainly no
other more qualified than GR Founding
Editor Marc Horovitz to shed some light
on my plight (p. 43).
