Our Canada – August-September 2019

(Steven Felgate) #1
Robert
E. Spooner
438 SQUADRON
Robert was born on September
12, 1920, on Vancouver Island.
He joined the RCAF in 1941
and flew the famous Hawker
Typhoon with 438 Squadron.

Robert flew 97 missions
over Europe, and participated
in the support of Falaise and
Nijmegen, the crossing of the
Rhine and the German Ardennes
oŠensive. He later married and
lived on Vancouver Island, where
he joined the Victoria Village
Squires Barbershop Singers.
He passed away in 2016.

“The Typhoon was a tank
of an airplane. I once had
a mid-air collision over
Germany (with another
Typhoon in the squadron.)
We were in a cloud and
I pulled up to get away
from his Typhoon, and
he must have seen me
at the same time, rammed
his stick and his aircraft
hit my aileron. My aileron
jammed where I had little
control. We both made
it back, but it was the
closest I came to using
a parachute.”
