Standing in the
hall of fame
Canberra Raiders have inducted three more
legends into their Hall of Fame at last Friday
night’s inaugural Hall of Fame Dinner at the
National Convention Centre Canberra. First coach
of the club Don Furner, first captain of the club
David Grant and first 300 game player Jason
Croker are the latest round of inductees, joining
the 14 inductees who were announced at this
year’s season launch.

Rising stars
The NRL has launched a new junior rugby
league program, League Stars, in a bid
to grow the game’s participation and
development pathways. League Stars, which
is a short-term introductory program for
children aged 5-12, is aimed at exposing
more players to rugby league through regular
non-contact skills sessions held after school
and in the holidays. The new concept will
rival the AFL’s Auskick and soccer’s Mini-Roos
Kick-Off programs and has already proven
successful with 76 per cent of the 5,817 boys
and girls who took part in pilot programs.

Jetting upwards
The Newtown Jets are launching a new book
called Taking it to the Streets – the Second
Life of the Newtown RLFC, which details the
club’s re-birth between 1991 to 2018. It will
be available to purchase directly from the
club, online and through selected bookstores
from July 30.

Coyne to face panel
Rugby league commissioner Mark Coyne
will face the ARLC on August 1 to discuss
his future after a police incident in Singapore.
He has been criticised for failing to report the
incident to the commission but will be given
the chance to plead his case and remain in
his current role.

Shark becomes chook
Big signing news hit the NRL this week with
up-and-coming halfback Kyle Flanagan linking
up with the Roosters on a two-year deal from

  1. The 20-year-old will likely take over
from Cooper Cronk, who is retiring at the end
of the season. “Kyle is a crafty playmaker and
an exciting young talent, whose services we
are delighted to have secured,” said Roosters
CEO, Joe Kelly. “We look forward to welcoming
Kyle to the Roosters and to watching his
    development over the coming seasons.”
