LETTER OF THE WEEK

Let me turn soothsayer for a while.
I predict the route changes announced
for this year’s RideLondon-Surrey Classic
will aff ect neither the pattern of the
race nor the tediously inevitable bunch-
sprint fi nish.
Big roads between Hampton Court and
West Byfl eet. More big roads from West
Horsley to Box Hill. Will the bunch fi ght
like demons all the way there? Or will a
tame breakaway be allowed up the road
so as to take the pressure off? I’m betting
on the latter.
Five circuits of Box Hill sound good, but
that’s still a mere 1 km of stiff climbing per
lap, followed by plenty of recovery time.
Only a sky-high pace, or a crash, or a
howling crosswind, are likely to shred the
peloton. And even if it shreds, the
absurdly easy fi nal 40km provide ample
opportunity to re-muster.
This race is no ‘classic’. The way to
improve it is to fi nd a more challenging
return route. Send the race into the hills
further east.
Michael Bailey, email

Ed – If a central London fi nish is needed,
then there’s no way around this. And
plenty of classics have been won in
bunch sprints. The term is more down to
a race’s history than its route.

Shorten the Tour de France to three stages
only to stop the use of energy drinks. In fact
all energy drinks are only substitutes to
quickly recover your body’s electrolytes.
Yekensharob Gnasilacam

Ketones are the group of chemicals that tell
the body to burn stored fat over digested
energy sources. Your body naturally will
produce them in abundance if you fast long
enough or minimise your carbohydrate
intake. Noeland Christy

Iced latte is my miracle drink. Titipat
Lift Chutikul

Th e only question should be: what brand
are they using? Robert Dumitriu

What’s the fuss? It’s NOT a banned
substance, and several teams in the Tour are
using it. So it seems like it does have some
benefi ts, since Lotto has a few wins in the
Tour thus far. Kenneth Mathurin

Some of these guys are eating food as well.
Neil Edwards

I mean we know that Jumbo-Visma is not the
only team using it. It’s just the only team
willing to admit it. Andres Antonio Carriedo

Nothing more than a diff erent type of
energy drink. Nothing wrong with it
whatsoever. Very expensive though.
It’s just that it’s new, everyone is talking
about it. Jenny DeClerc
