Kauai Writers Conference
The 2019 Kauai Writers Conference will
be held from November 4 to November
10 at the Marriott Resort on Kalapaki
Beach in Kauai, Hawai’i. The confer-
ence features master classes in fiction
and creative nonfiction, as well as agent
pitch sessions, manuscript critiques, and
publishing consultations. The faculty
includes fiction writers Richard Bausch,
Christina Baker Kline, Paula McLain,
Joshua Mohr, Téa Obreht, Priya Parmar,
Anne Perry, Whitney Scharer, Lisa
Wingate, Meg Wolitzer, and Victo-
ria Zackheim; and creative nonfiction
writers Amy Ferris, Linda Schreyer,
and Sheila Weller. Participating agents
include Stephanie Cabot (Gernert Com-
pany), Susan Golomb (Writers House),
and Michelle Tessler (Tessler Literary
Agency). Participating publishing profes-
sionals include Kevin Larimer (Poets &
Writers), Lisa Sharkey (HarperCollins),
David Sterry (Book Doctors), and
Brooke Warner (She Writes Press). The
cost of the conference, which includes
all lectures, performances, small group
craft workshops, and some meals, is
$695; master classes are available for an
additional $595. Individual master classes
cost $695. Agent pitch sessions are avail-
able for an additional $50; manuscript
critiques and publishing consultations
for $95; and a ticket to the Literary
Luau on November 8 is $79. Lodging is

Kentucky Women Writers
Conference
The 2019 Kentucky Women Writers
Conference will be held from September
19 to September 22 at the Carnegie Cen-
ter in Lexington, Kentucky. The confer-
ence features workshops and craft talks
in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfic-
tion. The faculty includes poets Franny
Choi, DaMaris B. Hill, and Dorianne


Laux; fiction writers Chantel Acevedo,
Lydia Millet, and Antonya Nelson;
and nonfiction writers Nicole Chung,
Barbara Hurd, and Darcey Steinke. The
cost of the conference is $125; the cost
for students is $30. Workshops are avail-
able for an additional $100. Manuscript
consultations with literary agent Alice
Speilburg (Speilburg Literary Agency)
are available for an additional $45. Work-
shop space is limited; registration is first

Kimmel Harding Nelson Center
for the Arts
Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for
the Arts, located in the Missouri River
town of Nebraska City, Nebraska, of-
fers residencies of two to eight weeks
year-round to poets, fiction writers, and
creative nonfiction writers. Residents
are provided with housing, studio space,
and a $100 weekly stipend. For residen-
cies from January 6, 2020, to June 19,
2020, using the online submission system
submit up to 10 poems totaling no more
than 30 pages, two stories or novel chap-
ters totaling no more than 7,500 words,
or two essays or chapters of a work of
creative nonfiction totaling no more than
7,500 words, along with a statement of
purpose, contact information for two
references, and a curriculum vitae with a
$35 application fee by September 1. The
application deadline for residencies in the
second half of the year is March 1, 2020.

    Lanesboro Artist Residency
    Program
    Lanesboro Arts offers two- or four-
    week residencies from January to May
    and August to December to emerging
    poets, fiction writers, and nonfiction
    writers whose work is “place-based and
    community-engaged” in Lanesboro,
    Minnesota. Writers who are residents of
    Minnesota or New York City are eligible.
    Students enrolled in a degree-granting


program are ineligible. Residents are
provided with private lodging, work
space, and a stipend of $1,000 per week.
Using the online submission system,
submit a writing sample of 6 to 10 pages,
a project description, an artist statement,
a résumé, and contact information for
two references by July 31. There is no

Mayborn Literary Nonfiction
Conference
The 2019 Mayborn Literary Nonfiction
Conference will be held from July 19 to
July 21 at the Hilton Dallas/Fort Worth
Lakes Executive Conference Center
in Grapevine, Texas. The conference
theme this year is “Justice in America.”
The conference features workshops
in creative nonfiction as well as panel
discussions, lectures, and pitch sessions
with agents. Participating writers include
fiction writers Ben Fountain and Walter
Kirn and nonfiction writers Laura Bell,
Nikole Hannah-Jones, Sonia Nazario,
Naveena Sadasivam, Albert Samaha,
and Margot Lee Shetterly. Participat-
ing agents include Farley Chase (Chase
Literary) and BJ Robbins (BJ Robbins
Literary). Tuition, which includes meals,
is $475. Pitch sessions with agents are
available for an additional $50. Lodging
at the conference hotel is available for

Poets on the Coast: A Weekend
Retreat for Women
The 2019 Poets on the Coast: A Week-
end Writing Retreat for Women will be
held from September 6 to September 8
at the Country Inn in the historic river
town of La Conner, Washington. The
retreat includes a poetry workshop, craft
classes, and one-on-one mentoring with
faculty. The faculty includes poets Kelli
Russell Agodon, Susan Rich, and Lena
Khalaf Tuffaha. Tuition, which does
not include lodging or meals, is $424.
