JOE HILL’S NOS4A2 is n’t exactly shy
about its big horror hook. A 135-year-
old man named Charlie Manx roams
the hidden highways of America in his
vintage Wraith with its none-too-subtle
licence plate, abducting children and
feeding on their energy as he whisks them
away to a terrifying magical realm called
Christmasland, turning them into monsters
who’ll be forever young.
But at the heart of the novel is the
very human character of Vic McQueen. A

young woman from a troubled home, Vic
is a tough but vulnerable person who finds
herself in Charlie Manx’s crosshairs when
she finds one of these impossible passages
in a long-demolished bridge that can take
her wherever she needs to go. In that very
particular Joe Hill way, the story delivers
truly nightmarish genre chills and a gritty
real-world story with a flawed hero. It was
the latter which made the book such an
enticing proposition for Jami O’Brien, the
showrunner on AMC’s TV adaptation.
