ali, the Bukit Peninsula, Uluwatu and
Padang – exotic names that conjure
up the magic of what was referred
to as the 'Islands of the Gods’, when
surfers fi rst started travelling there in the late 70s.
Off shore everyday, bikinis and boardshorts, and
a cultural experience among the most welcoming
people on earth, made for an unforgettable
adventure that captured the essence of surf travel.
These days it is busier, with many bars many more
buildings, but a trip to Bali is still an experience
that every surfer should tick off.- Temples
Least crowded section at Ulu’s, due to its shallow
ledge and a long paddle. Good on the smaller days,
but you have to be on your A-game. - The Bombie
Huge waves break on the reefs most exposed section.
Some of the biggest waves in Indo have been ridden
here. Super impressive to watch from cliff s. - The Peak
Directly out front of the infamous cave, that provides
the entry and exit point and is the most consistent
section of the reef. It picks up plenty of swell, with
shifty peaks that spread a crowd.
4. Outside Corner
'Proper' Ulu’s. Starts to work on a big swell at low tide- this is the wave that made Bali famous in the late 70s
and 80s.
- Racetracks
The last section along the reef, which starts on the
corner of the reef to the right as you exit the cave and
runs past the headland. Gets super shallow on a super
sharp reef, but has long walls and great tubes. - Padang Padang
So good they named it twice was the saying. A short
fast, hollow left. Padang is home to some of the best
surfers in Indonesia and also hosts the Rip Curl Cup.
There are lots of bars, a cool beach and lots of places
to stay including luxury hotels. - Uluwatu Village
Surf bungalows, homestays, villas, hostels, hotels,
resorts – you name it. Options range from an aff ordable
homestay at $15-30 a night, up to several hundred for
those who want the top-end accommodation. - The Single Fin
Sunset drinks at The Single Fin on top of the cliff are
a must. It’s a great place for lunch and stunning when
there is surf and a great sunset. It’s a really popular
bar that sees huge crowds on Wednesday and
Sunday nights.
